Florida Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) - Court Mandated Course

With a 4 Hour Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course you keep points off your record and reduce your fines. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, you must complete a basic driver improvement course (Traffic Collision Avoidance Course) to retain your driver license if you were a driver in a crash and are found at fault, someone was transported to the hospital, or you had two crashes in a two-year period, which resulted in property damage greater than $50.

Reasons for Attending Basic Driver Improvement (source: Florida DHSMV)

As stated by the Florida DHSMV, you are required to complete a BDI course if you want to retain your driver license in the following situation:

  • you were a driver in a crash and are found at fault and
  • someone was transported to the hospital or
  • you had two crashes in a two-year period, which resulted in property damage greater than $50.
Take a BDI Course If you are issued a ticket for a non-criminal traffic violation, and you do not have a commercial driver license, you may choose to complete a basic driver improvement course (BDI course) instead of getting points on your motor vehicle record. (source: Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles) In some instances, you may elect to attend a BDI course to benefit from insurance discounts. Insurance discounts are solely at the discretion of your insurance provider.

Electing to Attend Traffic School (source: Florida DHSMV)

As prescribed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, if you receive a moving violation, you may elect to attend and complete a basic driver improvement course (BDI course). Some benefits of attending a BDI course are:

  • Your auto insurance rates cannot increase and your auto insurance policy cannot be cancelled because of this violation, unless the violation in question involved an accident where you were the at fault driver.
  • Motor Vehicle points may not be added to your driving license record, adjudication of guilt is withheld, safe driver status is kept if applicable, and the traffic fine is reduced up to 18%. You cannot make an election to take a BDI course under this subsection if you have made this election to take a BDI course in the last 12 months. An individual can make no more than five BDI course elections in their entire lifetime.
Within 30 days from the date you got the moving violation citation and prior to attending a BDI class, you must:
  • tell the Court Clerk in the county where you received the citation that you desire to go to traffic school, and
  • pay an election fee to the Court Clerk in the county where you earned the traffic citation.
  • You may contact the traffic school of your choice to register for class. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles must approve the course. Traffic schools are listed in your local telephone directory under "driving instruction" or "traffic schools." Approved course providers are also listed below. To locate an approved on-line basic driver improvement course, refer to your local telephone directory, or contact the course providers listed below.
